■ xplorer² v6.4 released, codename Fluffy Clouds
A lot of work has gone into the latest update although you can't see much on the surface. The headline feature of version 6.4 is extended
cloud drive support, including the graphical cloud status icons that you see in windows explorer:
The Cloud status icon column works for all compatible cloud providers (OneDrive, DropBox, Box, Proton and iCloud). To see this detail activate the cloud status column using View > Select columns menu command. There are some cloud drives that can't show this information because they aren't fully compatible with xplorer² (or windows file explorer). In such drives (Google drive, pCloud, Mega etc) you will only see status information as an icon overlay. Other than that you can manage your online files like as if they were in a normal folder on your HD.
Cloud folders work pretty much as other filesystem folders. The only exception are files that are online-only
(
cloud status icon) that aren't stored on your HD. If you want to open such a file, it must be downloaded first. For more information see the documentation
Other improvements of note include: (see the changelog for the full list of changes):
- Diacritics aware file search. Many languages have accents that modify letters, e.g. the German umlaut ü, the French circonflexe û, and Greek τόνοι ύ. A new program option (Advanced section) tells xplorer² to ignore such diacritics for all text property searches (including filenames and file contents) so accents become irrelevant — similar concept to case insensitivity. Thus hallo will match hällo and vice versa.
- UI color adjustment. A new program option (Appearance category) lets you pick the active pane text color. Using the various background color adjustments it is possible to make xplorer² look like Norton Commander or anything else you please. Please make sure there is a good contrast between the text and background colors or xplorer² will use default text colors.
In the "not so welcome" news section, xplorer² v6.4 now costs more to buy. There has been no price increase for
22 years (!), but eventually inflation got the best of us <g>. Upgrade prices are held constant for the time being.
Version 6.4 includes many deep changes in xplorer² (e.g. column ID persistence). It is recommended that you export your settings before running the new version, using Actions > Export settings menu as a safety backup — if you plan to go back to earlier versions.
Upgrade information
Version 6.4 is a free upgrade for most people that already own v6.x licenses — except those received gratis as a free upgrade from v5.x. Customers with old v5.x keys can upgrade to the latest version with a
