■ xplorer² v6.2 released, codename Iron Man
The latest xplorer² version 6.2 has been extensively reinforced from within, to withstand attacks from poorly built and half-tested shell extensions bent on bringing havoc to their guest process. It will not correct faulty shell extensions but you should see less crashes. Catering for startup problems, v6.2 introduces a
startup sentinel, which will monitor for a stuck xplorer² window and will try to open one in "safe" mode to get you going. Some people leave xplorer² on unavailable network drives or other situations that make things
slow. xplorer² will try to open a window that eliminates most potential troubles, including folders, sort-by properties and even slow color coding rules.
Coming to externals, a handy [+] button to the right hand side of the tab strip will open a new tab, as you find in your internet browser. When clicked it behaves like File > New tab menu command. You can also double click on the empty space where no tabs show.
Other improvements of note include: (see the changelog for the full list of changes):
- Full screen mode. If you need maximal space to browse large folders use Window > Full screen menu. xplorer² dual panes take over the entire screen, hiding all panes except for the menu bar. You can issue commands using their keyboard shortcuts or the mouse. For preview use the two-mouse button peek preview. To restore the normal window press <ESC> key or use the same menu command.
- ISBN information. eBook collectors will appreciate a new stock file property called ISBN (use <ALT+K> to pick columns in detailed view mode). As there is no globally accepted standard for ISBN tags, xplorer² reads the first few pages of each book to extract any International Standard Book Number it finds — which takes some time to extract. ISBN is useful for detecting duplicate books. Make sure you download the new ebook search and preview plugin too.
- Undo simple operations. A few simple file operations like rename, copy/paste (or drag-drop) and delete to recycle bin can be often undone using windows explorer (!). Press <CTRL+Z> in xplorer² to get access to the desktop background menu and see if there is any undo menu command to be found. If you have your own keyboard bindings, then assign <CTRL+Z> to miscellaneous command number 57643 (use Customize > Keyboard menu)
